Authentic Leadership

We are all leaders in our own way. Whether you are managing a business, family or yourself, the opportunity to be authentic and bring all parts of who you are to wherever you are will help you realize your potential as a leader and as a human being.

In February, 2007, the Harvard Business Review published an article entitled “Discovering Your Authentic Leadership” that defined authentic leaders as those who:

  • “Demonstrate a passion for their purpose,
  • Practice their values consistently,
  • Lead with their hearts as well as their heads,
  • Establish long-term meaningful relationships,
  • Possess the self-discipline to get results.”

Many of us feel like we need to be different than who we truly are to fit in and be successful. We try to be like someone else, more aggressive, guarded or we leave our emotions at the door. For some, we get to a point in our career or life when this no longer works for us – what we are doing lacks meaning and alignment with who we are.

Developing your authentic leadership celebrates who you are and what you have to offer, while integrating your passion for business and ability to get results. In the age of sustainability and corporate social responsibility, authenticity may be what our world is longing for.

In 2006, Tana Heminsley (www.tanaheminsley.com) launched her Authentic Leadership for Women™ dinner series for Vancouver, B.C.-based women leaders. Now on her fourth dinner series, Tana continues to create evenings full of discussion, support, exploration and development so that women are able to bring all their gifts to the table, whether it is the dinner table or the conference room table.

Adapting Tana’s dinner series, DJ hosts a series of dinner conversations for women leaders—anyone who is a leader in their life—whether in the boardroom, in the home, as a volunteer or an entrepreneur—on the following topics:
